Based on the highly innovative material of porous titanium, Protip has created a complete range of implants: from ENT to dental surgery and orthopaedics, the applications are limitless.
Porous titanium is good for everything – it could be Protip’s company motto. Because the material is easily colonized by cells, it's the perfect choice for Protip to use in producing implants and prosthetic devices, notably for ENT, orthopaedic and dental applications. “Using titanium, we have most notably perfected an artificial larynx which allows victims of throat cancer to once again lead a ‘normal’ life without the trauma of undergoing a tracheotomy,” explains Maurice Bérenger, President and CEO of Protip.

“Clinical trials began in 2010 with a market launch planned for the beginning of 2012. All of our work consists in the treatment of the material’s surface in order to improve the contact between the implant and the host.” Protip is counting on this expertise to develop other research programs in the fields of orthopaedics and dental surgery.
A company with many distinctions
Starting in 2004 the regional government classed Protip among Alsace’s “companies to watch”; it then won the Ministry of Research’s national competition for innovative technology business creation, in the category “Creation-Development.” The following year, Protip received the “Life Sciences Grand Prize” on the occasion of the 7th “Springboard for Entrepreneurs” meeting organised by the French Senate to bring entrepreneurs and investors together. In 2008, Protip was a finalist in the competition sponsored by the Alliance for Biological and Medical Engineering and Innovative Technology. In the same year, the company won first prize at Start’Est, the European Meeting for Capital and Innovation.
Today...
With the help of SEMIA, an alsacian innovative business incubator, Protip continues to develop. Thanks to years of experience and a staff of 5 highly skilled employees, Protip is working on tomorrow's implants and prosthetic devices by expanding its technology's applications to medico-surgical fields beyond ENT.
Protomed of Marseille heeds the call of Alsace...Established in Marseilles in southern France, Protomed offers scientific and technical devices for the conception, development and testing of innovative medical equipment, with emphasis on the cardiovascular sector. In 2008, Protomed was directly involved in collaborative R&D with some of Alsace's top medtech players (IRCAD, LSIIT) to develop surgical instruments for umbilical laparoscopic surgery. Their project was awarded Alsace BioValley's label of certification in 2009.

Alsace, the obvious choice!
Encouraged by the success of this initial venture, in 2009 Protomed decided to locate its Surgical Perspective star'up in Strasbourg in order to benefit from Alsace's future opportunities for medtech partnerships. This business project is part of Protomed's growth strategy targeting a single activity in a region which is home to the best research teams. After a promising start in the surgical instruments sector, Protomed is diversifying its activity to R&D for implants.

Today...
Surgical Perspective currently employs 2 people and plans to hire more with the help of local investors and business angels. The company marketed one device for gynaecological surgery and will introduce three new products in 2011. These developments were made possible in part by the know-how of Alsatian companies that were able to respond to Surgical Perspective's manufacturing needs. IRCAD was also a vital partner in the company's success, by providing facilities and R&D support.
