    LIGHT VISION is dedicated to the development and the marketing of optoelectronic systems.
    LIGHT VISION designs intelligent glasses restoring partial vision to people with visual impairment. By combining retinal imaging display and eye tracking technology, this medical device is intended to project real scene images onto a safe retinal area, independently of the eye movement

  • VIRONEXX:
    Development and marketing of new agents in the prevention and treatment of viral infections: Pr. Thomas Baumert.
    VIRONEXX aims to become a key player in the creation of innovative approaches for the prevention and therapy of viral infections.
    With its initial programs, VIRONEXX will focus on the development of unique and innovative biological compounds for the prevention and treatment of chronic HCV infection – a major cause of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer worldwide. Addressing the limitations of standard of care and novel therapies, VIRONEXX will first focus on the development of monoclonal antibodies targeting essential host entry factors.

  • DEFYMED
    Development of a macro-encapsulation device for pancreatic islets
    : Séverine Sigrist

  DEFYMED mission is to develop and market implantable bio-artificial medical devices for various therapeutic applications including liver, kidney, neurological and
  endocrine diseases. The first company product is MAILPAN (MAcro-encapsulation of PANcreatic islets), a bio-artificial pancreas which has the potential to restore the
  physiological secretion of insulin in type 1 diabetes patients. DEFYMED is a spin-off of the Strasbourg-based CeeD (Centre européen d’études du Diabète) Research Institute.

    Development of innovative epigenetic tools and biomarkers
    : Ali Hamiche 
    EPIGEX proposes innovating tools for the research and development of epigenetic diseases encompassing cancer, inflammation, and auto-immune diseases.
    The company portfolio includes molecular biology reagents for the screening of therapeutic compounds, a technology for the cartography of protein interaction impaired in epigenetic diseases and a set of new tumor biomarkers.

  • ARTIOS NANOMED
    Nanotechonological implant for regenerative nanomedicine
    : Antony Rutt
    Using nanomedical technology, Artios is developping tissular regeneration implants for the market. The project is the outcome of Dr. Nadia Benkirane-Jessel's research at the head of the "Active Biomaterials and Tissular Engineering" (mixed  research unit UMR S 977, Inserm/U. Strasbourg). Her development of "intelligent" nanostructured biomaterials to accelerate bone or cartilage regeneration has led to a 2011 patent submitted collaboratively by Inserm and the University of Strasbourg.

    Development of medical equipment for transcranial magnetic stimulation: Romuald GINHOUX
    AXILUM ROBOTICS is a spin-off company from the medical robotics research group of LSIIT, a joint research unit of the University of Strasbourg, CNRS and INSA Strasbourg. Its mission is to develop and commercialize dedicated robotized solutions to assist health care professionals with medical procedures.
    The first product of AXILUM ROBOTICS is a robot designed to assist psychiatrists and neurologists for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, a noninvasive procedure for the treatment of various neurological and psychiatric disorders.

    ALMETIS is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery and the development of innovative metal-based therapeutics in oncology up to clinical phase.

    The core technology is about organometallic drugs that have demonstrated anticancer properties answering to usual drawbacks of chemotherapies (toxicities and resistance) and constituting a new class of anticancer drugs.

Regional "Start-Est Competition" 2008: Alsace's winning companies in the health/life sciences sector

2 prizes were awarded to the most attractive projects, selected by a jury presided by Francis Muller, President of the Alsace Business Angels association:

  • PROTIP

ProTip SAS designs, develops and markets medical prostheses and implants using porous titanium with a special focus on ear, nose and throat applications. The company has unique, world-class expertise in manufacturing complex form factors based on medical grade titanium microspheres. This means it can produce an infinite number of variants in final form, porosity and even composition. The biomaterial thus obtained enables permanent implantation even in a septic environment. ProTip manufactures the prostheses using an innovative procedure patented by the company, which obviates the need for an expensive mold.

  • CELL PROTHERA
    CellProthera is a medical biotech company founded in 2008 in Mulhouse (France). Its activity is currently focused on the development of a revolutionary therapeutic approach allowing the regeneration of myocardial tissue following acute myocardial infarct by injection of a cell graft containing autologous adult stem cells (ASC) sampled directly from the patient.
