At the heart of the BioValley
| ![]() |
When it started off, in 1996, BioValley was one of the first European initiatives for the promotion of life science. Today, BioValley is widely acknowledged as one of the very first bioclusters in the world, bringing together over 600 businesses, 40 research organisations, 100,000 students, 50,000 jobs in the sector, 11 technoparks, 12 universities and institutes offering life science, biotech, chemistry or nanoscience training and over 30 technological platforms.
BioValley's actions at trinational level have been widely supported by the Interreg European funds. After having built a network of over 3,000 persons thanks to Interreg II support (1997-2001), the Interreg III programme '2002-2007) allowed the positioning and consolidation of BioValley as an international trademark while also contributing in highlighting the region's attractiveness in the sectors of healthcare and life science.
Nowadays, the issue is to make BioValley an essential tool in the policies and economic development actions of the three regions in the sectors of life science and healthcare, thus becoming a source of employment and investment in the area.
